We are planning to open by November 7th, but please call 364-9363 to confirm.
As one patron put it: "You can see forever!" Indeed, along with the best in casual fine dining, the
spectacularly panoramic view has always been a part of the Mount Nittany Inn experience, beginning in
1919 when M.E. (Pete) Coldron opened a roadside stand so that view seekers could enjoy a Nehi or a
Coke, some peanuts or pretzels and, if need be, get their car radiators (which usually overheated
because of the slow trip up the mountain) refilled.
In 1928 "Pete" constructed the original building, primarily to keep his lumber from being thrown down
the mountain by his neighboring competitor. Since then, in addition to a restaurant, it has been a coffee
shop, a grill, and a bar-complete with dancers and plenty of brawls.
The first significant improvements were undertaken by Bill and Betty Zang, who purchased the Inn in
1975, and who worked long hours to rid it of its tawdry reputation. Major renovations were begun in
1991, and included relocating the kitchen, refurbishing the bar, adding extensive decking and erecting a
large addition.
The first of two tragedies struck in April, 2003 when a fire originating in the kitchen found its way into
the roof system, quickly consuming it, and causing substantial damage. Rebuilt in 2004, and just months
from re-opening, fire again struck the Inn. Despite herculean efforts by firefighters from across the
county, this time the Inn was totally destroyed.
Like the phoenix, the Inn has again risen from its ashes. Today, it offers lunch and dinner seven days a
week, whether inside one of our dining rooms, upstairs in our Looking Glass lounge, or outside where
you can enjoy some of the most dramatic dining in Pennsylvania-no matter what the season. It also
plays host to numerous banquets, business meetings, celebrations and receptions.
The Mount Nittany Inn is in the heart of Central Pennsylvania, conveniently located near Penn's Cave,
the Grange Fair Grounds, Amish Country, Historic Bellefonte, Tussey Mountain Ski Area, and the
Pennsylvania State University. We are on Route 144, at the summit of Centre Hall Mountain.
